Welcome to our world

The Violent Veg team are a creative collective of highly skilled writers and artists whose identities remain a closely guarded secret. Together, they form the Violent Veg Gag Team. These reclusive individuals work tirelessly, sharing one common goal, to make people laugh heartily, through the medium of fruit and veg. Now, for the first time, we invite you behind the scenes to explore some of the secrets of their craft.

Planting the Seeds

At the very start of the process, the team are planted in the Violent Veg Creative Greenhouse where the gag germination process can begin. Each member of the Gag Team comes laden down with ideas, sketches and a good sense of humour, and after several hours in the hothouse, the seeds of some great gags are sown.

Weeding out the Best Ideas

Over the next week, the ideas are tended and nurtured, until fully formed gags take root. The Gag Team then carefully select the pick of the bunch and prepare them for the next stage of development. All weedy gags are recycled on the compost heap. It's a great feeling when we know we.ve grown the gag equivalent of a prize courgette.

Sketching and Approval

Now the Gag Team puts the idea down in sketch form, deciding on characters, expressions and backgrounds. Each gag is presented to the big cheeses in the business, at a new product meeting. Occasionally, they'll hold their heads in their hands and groan. Every now and then, they'll decide a gag's just too rude. But mostly, they just laugh heartily and give the gag the thumbs up.

Down the Market

With shopping list in hand, the Gag Team head off to the local Farmers. Market to recruit the necessary characters. Only the freshest, firmest and most talented fruit and veg will do, and once they've been found, they are brought back to The Creative Greenhouse to be groomed for stardom.

Knocking them into Shape

To make them fit for the screen, the fruit and veg are enhanced using various materials, including traditional modelling clay, baked clay and copper wire. Over time, we have built up an impressive selection of body parts. It looks a bit gruesome, but we can assure you than no fruit or veg have been harmed in the production of Violent Veg images. Well, perhaps just a few…

The Stage is Set

With the characters busy in wardrobe, it.s time to move into the Violent Veg Photo Studio. The stage is dressed to set the scene for the gag, with some of the props being custom-made to scale and others borrowed from the real world.

Lights… Camera… Action…

Here are our vegetable actors, poised and ready for their first (and possibly last) performance. On the whole, they are consummate professionals, although some cast members are easier to work with than others. The less flexible actors often need a little help standing up, with the aid of cocktail sticks, pins and glue. But after a bit of gentle encouragement, the Gag Team always gets the best shot.

A Bit of Spit and Polish

The photographs are now transferred from the digital camera to the computer. The less handsome fruit or veg may demand a little scrubbing up, but we try to keep this to a minimum. The hilarious text is then overlaid before the completed image is sent off for production.

The Gag is Launched

And here's the finished article, fully grown and ready to be distributed to your favourite stores!
